Dr Hildburgh and the English medieval alabaster

Catherine Oakes

Dr Walter Leo Hildburgh (1876–1955) owned the largest private collection of English medieval alabaster panels before he gave them to London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) on his seventieth birthday in 1946. Working from previously unpublished material in the V&A's sculpture department and amongst the Nelson papers housed in the National Museums, Liverpool, this article explores Hildburgh as a collector of alabasters, and considers how far his methods and attitudes have played their part in the subsequent reception history of the genre.
